Reading List

On March 16th I started A Princess of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs). As of today I have read:
The Gods of Mars (ERB)
The Warlord of Mars (ERB)
Thuvia, Maid of Mars (ERB)
The Chessmen of Mars (ERB)
The Master Mind of Mars (ERB)
A Fighting Man of Mars (ERB)
Swords of Mars (ERB)
Synthetic Men of Mars (ERB)
Llana of Gathol (ERB)
John Carter and the Giant of Mars (John Coleman,  ERB's son)
Skeleton Men of Jupiter (ERB)
Starship Troopers (Robert Heinlein)
The Jungle Book (Rudyard Kipling)
The Second Jungle Book (Rudyard Kipling)
Tarzan of the Apes (ERB)
The Return of Tarzan (ERB)
The Beasts of Tarzan (ERB)
The Son of Tarzan (ERB)
Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar (ERB)
Jungle Tales of Tarzan (ERB)
Tarzan the Untamed (ERB)
The Land That Time Forgot (ERB)
The People That Time Forgot (ERB)
Out of Time's Abyss (ERB)
And as of this moment I am in the middle of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Robert Heinlein). In the mail I have received the majority of the remainder of the Tarzan series (heck yeah).
Until March 16th, the only reading I had done for probably the last 10-15 years was either history, biography, politics or some combination of the three. I had forgotten how much fun Science Fiction can really be, as well as how much you can learn from it too.
I also can not believe that I'm 43 and have just now started reading Burroughs. The Mars and Tarzan series are now my two top favorite series of all time (just nudging Lord of the Rings to three).
Also, EVERY American should read Starship Troopers. "But, I've seen the movie. Isn't that good enough?" No gentle reader, it is not. Apples and oranges...

Best advice?
Do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and read Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Now I know that that seems like an awful lot to have read in roughly 47 days I read fairly quickly and the books were so dang good that it was just too hard to put them down. Basically, I got on a roll...

  1. I can not watch the movie version of Starship Troopers. I read the book so many times, that it literally fell apart. What they did to it in the movie was nothing short of criminal. I also agree that everyone should read it.

  2. It's on the reading list at West Point and Annapolis... Pretty impressive.
