Moronic? Yes. Disrespectful? Depends on your POV. A stunt that should lead to these idiots being put on leave with no pay? ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?!?
This will go down in history as one of the most brutal overreactions in the history of the world. I am in no way defending these two bozo's, but damn; there has to be a little common sense involved at some point. If we were to be held responsible by our employees for what we do OFF OF THE JOB, none of us would ever have jobs!! Seriously, what the hell is going on in this country?!?

Over reaction; quite possibly but let's ask what is wrong with it in this case?
Isn't there a time and a place for showing respect? And if so, isn't enforcing that social norm a good thing?
Your comment is correct if one looks at the event purely from the perspective of actions taken while away from the job. However, social media is pervasive and a prevailing meme, especially among Millenials, is to hold companies accountable for their actions (Yes, I know the company is not directly involved in this incident). One way of doing this is to boycott the company. Prior to social media this was not a significant issue because most people could not mobilize a large number of friends to participate in the boycott. Social media has a multiplicative effect in the sense that those we influence can in turn influence members of their own social circles. This dramatically raises the number of people who can take action against an organization. The point is at least one woman in question is an unofficial face of the company. As a result, her actions reflect badly on the company. Although I do not agree with employers asking potential hires for access to their social media accounts in order to determine if this is someone who would represent the firm in a positive way, I do understand their concern.Employers are simply responding to one of the unfortunate side effects of social media.
