Let me point out that my camera is a lot more sensitive to light than the human eye. The brief glimpse of the Sun looks a whole lot brighter than it actually was. During even a minor dust storm, you can look directly at the Sun and just make out that there is a large, round, dimly lit, "something-or-other" in the sky. Seriously.
